Understanding Adolescent Depression and Suicide Training Program:
Training for Educators

Date: Tuesday February 26, 2008
Registration Fee: $195.00 per person and includes a copy of CPRF's When Something's Wrong: Strategies for Teachers

Presenter: Dr. Stanley Kutcher, Sun Life Chair, Dalhousie University bio

Session Description: The Understanding Adolescent Depression & Suicide Training Program is designed to provide educators with evidence-based knowledge about adolescent depression and youth suicide risk factors. The goal is to teach educators how to effectively identify, evaluate, and provide appropriate interventions for depressed and/or suicidal youth.

The training program addresses both the health and education systems using a three-tiered approach, targeting physicians, health professionals and educators. Using an approach that is based on understanding key concepts and grounded in evidence-based principles, the training program is designed to help health providers and educators to communicate with each other so that young people at risk can be better identified and served without falling through the cracks.

Registration for this session is limited to 35 participants. Registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis and may be limited per organization. Please note that this session is specifically geared towards teachers and educators . Mental health professionals and youth workers are encouraged to register for the session scheduled in Peel on Monday February 25, 2008.

Mental Health and the Workplace

Date: Tuesday February 26, 2008
Registration Fee: $195.00 per person and includes a copy of CPRF's new handbook When Something's Wrong - Strategies for the Workplace

Presenters: Erika Pond Clements, OT, Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation bio

Session Description: Nearly 6 million, or 1 in 5 Canadians are likely to experience a diagnosable mental illness in their lifetime. Mental illness and addiction rank first and second as leading causes of disability in Canada and the United States. Depression and anxiety disorders account for more than two thirds of short-term disability claims and the World Health Organization estimates that by the year 2020 depression will be second only to heart disease as the leading global cause of disability and mortality. Individual employees affect the workplace culture and success of the business, therefore, an employer’s proactive interest in the well-being and mental health of employees makes good business sense.

Geared towards managers, human resource personnel and occupational health professionals, this workshop will highlight key issues to consider when addressing mental illness in the workplace. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on current practices and policies, to interact with others about what works and what doesn't, and to set concrete goals for implementing change within their own workplace.
