Understanding Adolescent Depression and Suicide Training Program:
Training for Mental Health Professionals

Date: Tuesday February 26, 2008
Location: Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Dr., Mississauga map
Registration Fee: $195.00 per person and includes a copy of CPRF's When Something's Wrong: Strategies for Families

Presenter: Dr. Stanley Kutcher, Sun Life Chair, Dalhousie University bio

Session Description: The Understanding Adolescent Depression & Suicide Training Program is designed to provide mental health professionals with evidence-based knowledge about adolescent depression and youth suicide risk factors. The goal is to teach service providers how to effectively identify, evaluate, and provide appropriate interventions for depressed and/or suicidal youth.

The training program addresses both the health and education systems using a three-tiered approach, targeting physicians, health professionals and educators. Using an approach that is based on understanding key concepts and grounded in evidence-based principles, the training program is designed to help health providers and educators to communicate with each other so that young people at risk can be better identified and served without falling through the cracks.

Please note that this session is specifically geared towards mental health professionals. Educators are encouraged to register for the session scheduled in Toronto on Tuesday February 26, 2008.

Concurrent Disorders

Date: Thursday March 6, 2008
Location: Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Dr., Mississauga map
Registration Fee: $175.00 per person

Presenters:
Art Mathews, Administrative Director, Whitby Mental Health Centre
Alison Potts, Concurrent Disorders System Integration Consultant, Lakeridge Health Centre

Session Description: Concurrent disorders (CD) refers to any combination of a mental health disorder co-occurring with a substance use disorder.  Due to the number of combinations possible, CD is very complex to treat.  Historically, mental health disorders and substance use have been treated in isolation.  Current research shows that the most effective form of intervention involves a holistic approach that considers and treats both disorders simultaneously.

This full day workshop will provide an overview of current disorder research findings and best practices that will assist communities to develop holistic intervention strategies in treating concurrent disorders. Participants will be introduced to tools that assess a community's capability to support concurrent disorders from a clinical, agency and system level perspective. A community based model featuring the Durham Concurrent Disorder Network's Community Consensus Charter will be profiled followed by small group discussions that will focus on strengthening local community services and networks.
